Fact Sheet

“Each spring greenhouse owners and homeowners make decisions about gardening products without considering how those products affect our air, water and soil.”

“That’s why Vermont Organics’ soils and other products are all organic! More than 75% of commercial potting mixes contain perlite and vermiculite, Those are two types of rocks mined from the ground that create air space for roots in potting soil. But in order for these rocks to be effective in potting media, they must be heated to 1,800 degrees. This process leaves a large carbon footprint! BOOOOOO!

“So how does Vermont Organics create this soil space? They use (VOR INC.) OMRI-listed coir blocks and break them down to the form of INCREDIBLE COIR. A coir block is a compressed block of coconut skins. When you wet it, it expands and does amazing things! It boosts organic activity in your soil, and it creates soil space, because Vermont Organics’ Number One Rule is: Roots need oxygen!

“And Vermont Organics’ soils protect ME — Pete Moss! Because they are peat-free! I’m a plant, so I scrape carbon out of the air, because we don’t want too much of it there. According to the United Nations, 6 percent of the global carbon footprint is in the harvesting of peat bogs. When the bogs are harvested, they’re drained, which harms their ecosystems — and ME! And my friends! That’s why the use of peat moss has been banned in the UK!

“Also, between 70 and 80 percent of all commercial soil mixes contain peat moss, and peat repels water. So when you buy those products, which already contain 50 to 60 percent water, hurt the environment by shipping heavier products. And the water in those soils’ bags make them heavy! Vermont Organics’ soils cost less to ship, because they’re dryer and contain organic coir instead of peat. Saving money is always a bonus! Right, Pete Moss?
